The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah

by Richard Bach

'...the Messiah smiled upon the multitude and said pleasantly unto them, "I quit."
For a moment the multitude was stricken dumb with astonishment.
And he said unto them, "If a man told God that he wanted most of all to help the suffering world, no matter the price to himself, and God answered and told him what he must do, should the man do as he is told?"
"Of course, Master!" cried the many. "It should be pleasure for him to suffer the tortures of hell itself, should God ask for it!"
"No matter what those tortures, nor how difficult the task?"
"Honor to be hanged, glory to be nailed to a tree and burned, if so be that God has asked," said they.
"And what would you do," the Master said unto the multitude, "if God spoke directly to your face and said, 'I command that you be happy in the world, as long as you live.' What would you do then?"
And the multitude was silent, not a voice, not a sound was heard upon the hillsides, across the valleys where they stood...'

Another one of Bach's gems, this tale is delightfully simple, yet wondrously profound. The unwitting hero, Richard himself, is taught 'what he already knows' about 'the messiah business' by an irreverent and omnipotent fellow barnstormer, whose guidance comes complete with a manual!

'Every person, all the events of your life are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you...
The mark of your ignorance is the depth of your belief in injustice and tragedy. What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.'

'..."Are you allowed...I didn't think...you get a job like that, the Messiah, you're supposed to save the world, aren't you? I didn't know the Messiah could just turn in his keys like that and quit."
"Of course you can quit! Quit anything you want, if you change your mind about doing it. You can quit breathing if you want to."
"Well, yes, Don, but it seems as if Messiahing would be different from other jobs, you know? Jesus going back to hammering nails for a living?"
He considered that, trying to see my point. "I don't see your point. Strange thing about that is he didn't quit when they first started calling him Saviour. Instead, at that piece of bad news, he tried logic: 'OK, I'm the son of God, but so are we all; I'm the saviour, but so are you! The works that I do, you can do!' Anybody in their right mind understands that."

This book will likely make you smile, and definitely make you think, as it gently reminds us all of the truth within.
